Sail’er Inn

Sail’er Inn v. Kirby was the landmark California Supreme court case that finally made it legal for women to bartend in California.  Sail’er Inn was the legal name of the Classic Cat, a topless bar on Sunset Boulevard that employed (topless) female bartenders in direct violation of then California law banning women from serving alcohol.  Sail’er Inn’s lawyers argued that the law discriminated against the bartenders based on sex and was technically breaking the federal law which has been established in the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
